I built Zillexit around one idea: testing is development. Not a phase. Not a checkpoint.
It’s how you write code.
Zillexit doesn’t treat tests as paperwork you hand off after coding. That “throw it over the wall” model? I’ve watched it burn teams.

I start with unit tests. They test one function. One method.
Nothing else. No database. No network.
Just raw logic.
Here’s what a real Zillexit unit test looks like:

It runs in milliseconds. If this fails, you know exactly where the bug lives. Not “somewhere in checkout.” Right there.
Skip unit tests and you’re debugging blind.
Integration tests come next. These check how pieces talk to each other.
Say your user registration module calls the database module. An integration test actually spins up both. And confirms data lands where it should.
No mocks. No fakes. Just real interaction.
If your unit tests pass but registration fails silently? That’s an integration gap. I’ve fixed three of those before lunch.
End-to-end tests are the final guardrail. They click buttons. Fill forms.
Submit carts. Log out.

I run E2Es once per day. Not on every push. Unit tests?
On every save.
You don’t need perfect coverage. You need smart coverage.

Write one unit test for your most-used function today. Then add one integration test that hits two modules. Then record one real user flow as an E2E.
That’s how you stop shipping broken things.

Your First Zillexit Test Suite: No Fluff, Just Run It

I ran my first Zillexit test suite blind. No docs. No tutorial.
Just me, a typo, and twenty minutes of staring at red text.
You’ll feel that too (unless) you skip the part where everyone assumes you already know what zillexit init does.
Step one: open your terminal in an empty folder and type zillexit init. That’s it. No flags.
No config prompts. It drops a tests/ folder and a basic config file. If it asks for your name or email?
You’re in the wrong tool. (Zillexit doesn’t care.)
Now write your first test. Make a file called tests/test_adder.py. Put this inside:

That’s all. No imports. No classes.
No self. Just one function with test_ at the start.
Run it with zillexit run. You’ll see green text. A dot.
Maybe the word PASSED. That’s your win.
If it fails? Change 5 to 6. Run again.
You’ll get red. A line number. An AssertionError.
That’s not broken (that’s) feedback. That’s why you test.
Zillexit run is the command. Not test, not pytest, not verify. Just zillexit run.

I broke production once because I assumed a string-split function handled empty input. It didn’t. The test would’ve caught it in 12 seconds.
Pro tip: rename testadder.py to testmath.py before you add a second test. Otherwise you’ll forget and wonder why test_adder.py has five unrelated functions.
Your job isn’t to write perfect tests first. It’s to run one test. Then two.
Then make one fail on purpose (just) to prove you can read the output.
Green means “I trust this code right now.”
Red means “I need to look.”
Avoiding Common Pitfalls: Test Smarter, Not Harder
Brittle tests break when you rename a variable. Or move a function. Or breathe wrong near the code.
That’s not testing behavior. That’s testing implementation (and) it’s exhausting.
I scrap brittle tests on sight. Focus on what the code does. Not how it does it.
The “Ice Cream Cone” anti-pattern? You know it. Dozens of slow E2E tests.
A handful of unit tests. It’s upside-down.
Unit tests run fast. They catch regressions early. E2E tests are slow and flaky.
Rely on them too much, and your CI pipeline crawls.
Build the pyramid (broad) base of unit tests, smaller middle layer of integration, tiny tip of E2E.
Start with units. Then add just enough integration to cover real workflows. Skip the rest until it hurts.
